Hornets Eye Bold Rebuild With Unconventional Targets: Bol Bol, Ben Simmons, and a McGowens Reunion

CHARLOTTE — Another year, another heartbreak for Hornets fans.

The 2024-25 season ended with the Charlotte Hornets limping to a 19-63 record, the worst in the Eastern Conference and second-worst in the NBA overall. With fans frustrated and Spectrum Center seats growing emptier, team governor Gabe Silverstone is reportedly pushing for radical changes — and not just in the front office.

According to league insiders, the Hornets are targeting a trio of polarizing talents in what could be the boldest pivot since the Kemba Walker era: Bol Bol, Ben Simmons, and a reunion with Bryce McGowens.

Enter: The Unicorn (Again)

Bol Bol, the 7-foot-2 enigma, remains one of the league’s most tantalizing mysteries. Despite flashes of brilliance with Phoenix and Denver, consistency has eluded him. Yet sources say Charlotte sees him as a potential “Giannis Lite” — a playmaking big who could thrive with more touches and a fast-paced system.

“He’s never really had a team built around his versatility,” said one scout close to the Hornets’ front office. “They think Charlotte can be that team.”

Ben Simmons — A Redemption Arc in the Queen City?

Equally eyebrow-raising is the interest in Ben Simmons, whose career has been marred by injuries and inconsistent play. Simmons, still only 28, sat out most of this past season for Brooklyn. But Silverstone and GM Mitch Kupchak reportedly see a path forward — envisioning Simmons as a defensive anchor and secondary playmaker who can thrive in a low-pressure environment.

“Charlotte might be the perfect restart,” said an anonymous executive. “Low media heat, young teammates, and a fan base that just wants to see some fight. They’re not asking him to be a star, just to stabilize the floor.”

McGowens Part II

In a move likely to excite longtime fans, the Hornets are also exploring a reunion with Bryce McGowens, who played with Charlotte from 2022 to 2024 before being waived and briefly signing with Sacramento. While he never broke out as a star, McGowens is remembered for his energy, athleticism, and chemistry with LaMelo Ball — should LaMelo stay.

“There’s a belief he still has untapped potential,” said a team source. “And at 23, he fits the new core they’re building.”

Big Changes, Bigger Questions

The rumored trio signals one thing loud and clear: the Hornets are swinging big — but unconventionally.

This offseason could also include changes at the coaching level. Head Coach Charles Lee, who inherited a raw roster and mounting losses, has not been guaranteed a second year. Front office reshuffling is also rumored, with analytics chief Dana Trenton reportedly out.

Fans are split. “I love Bol Bol, but we don’t need more projects,” said season ticket holder James Wilkerson. “We need a star. Someone who can lead.”

Yet others see a potential gem in the rubble. “Why not take risks?” said local fan Ari Porter. “We’ve tried playing it safe for 10 years and it hasn’t worked. Give me Bol, Ben, and Bryce — and let’s make some noise.”

Whether this plan brings redemption or yet another rebuild remains to be seen. One thing is certain: the Hornets are tired of losing. And this summer, they’re ready to gamble big.
