There’s a lot of talk going around in regards to fictional characters. Recently its been confirmed that Halle Bailey is going to play Airel in a live action version of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Some people are excited, some indifferent, some angry. There’s a lot of people who are classified as white who are upset that a non-white (black) female was given the role.

A lot of black people are overjoyed that a black female was given the role. I personally think its a slap in the face. In my view it’s a slap in the face because I know that somewhere theres a story about a princess in a country in Africa. This story probably has her getting reduced by a prince, a warrior. Why can’t that story be told? Princess Tiana. She is the ONLY Disney Princess who is classified as black and her story isn’t even an originally African one.

Mulan based on a true story of a Hua Mulan. Moana features ACUTAL non white gods rendered as NON WHITE. Yet black people are forced to settle for a story about a black girl kissing a frog. I say that to say we have to stop settling for the scraps we are given like Re-Skins and start sharing our own stories.

There are so many black people who are tirelessly working to produce content for us that it really feels like disrespect. For all fo the extra work that goes into creating a comic book or
